National JRA Essay Contest |
PURPOSE
The National Junior Red Angus Essay Contest was introduced in 2000 to celebrate and recognize outstanding youth committed to the future of the beef industry. Development of leadership skills in the beef industry is critical....this contest should help with the following skills: writing, thinking, problem solving, and general education of a product. Winners in the college division will be encouraged to forward their entries to the NCBA/CME Beef Industry Scholarship Program if they meet requirements.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
- Savings bonds and/or cash prizes will be awarded in four age divisions:
- Junior Division: Sixth Grade and under
- Intermediate Division: Seventh through Ninth Grade
- Senior Division: Tenth through Twelfth
- College Division: High School Graduates through 21 years
- Participants must be a current, active member of the National Junior Red Angus Association.
- All essays must be typewritten and submitted to:

- Entry deadline is MAY 1. Essays must be received by this date.
- Essays need to be submitted with a typewritten cover sheet that includes: Name, complete permanent mailing address and telephone number, year in school, and if applicable, field of study. Entries can be entered as hard copy or via computer.
TOPICS AND RULES
- Junior Division: 250 words or less on "What Makes Red Angus Special"
- cite at least one reference for the essay (personal interviews, magazines, books)
- Intermediate Division: 500 words or less on "Which RAAA Program is the Most Valuable and Why"
- cite at least two references for the essay (personal interview, magazines, books)
- Senior Division: 750 words or less on "How Can Red Angus Remain Competitive in Today's Beef Industry?"
- cite at least four references for the essay (personal interview, magazines, books)
- College Division: 750 words or less describing "What Red Angus Can Contribute to Profitablility in Today's Agriculture Economy"
- cite at least five references for the essay (personal interview, magazines, books)
SELECTION PROCEDURES
A committee will evaluate all the essays and select the top finalists in each age division. Essays will be evaluated on the basis of:
- Clarity of expression, spelling and grammar; 10%
- Accuracy of information; 35%
- Persuasiveness; 10%
- References cited; 5%
- Originality of thought and topic; 40%
