CONTESTS/COMPETITIONS
TEAMS SALES (Salesmanship) CONTEST
Conducted at Round-Up AnnuallyThe Team Sales Contest uses a live setting, information provided on the item which the team is selling and potential buyers (judges). The purpose of this contest is to evaluate the effectiveness of the presentation and the team’s ability to merchandise cattle or other beef industry related items through their communication skills, style, knowledge of the animal or product and use of available marketing tools such as: pedigree, performance and EPD’s.
- Each team will consist of members randomly drawn by the Round-Up planning committee that will represent, at a minimum, one junior member 15 years of age or younger and one senior member 16 years or older. Teams will most likely consist of four members.
- Teams will utilize information and/or data provided for the contest – which will be supplied by the Round-Up planning committee. If selling an animal, a complete performance pedigree with EPD’s will be provided to the team. If selling any other beef industry related item (such as embryos, semen, livestock equipment, a branded beef product…), all materials/ information needed will be provided by the Round-Up planning committee. Prior to the competition, the judges will receive the same information for their use in evaluating the accuracy of the sales information and to ask questions.
- Team members will be judged on their knowledge of the animal or product they are selling, ability to relate important information about the item (organization and style), poise and delivery and their overall effectiveness in convincing the judges to purchase the animal.
- Each team will have maximum of 8 minutes (timers will be used) for their presentation. Each team member must take a speaking role in the sales presentation.
STOCKMAN’S QUIZ AND EQUIPMENT IDENTIFICATION
Conducted annually at Round-Up
For 2006, the Stockman’s Quiz will consist of multiple choice, true/false questions, word search puzzles and hidden message puzzles relating to all segments of the cattle industry including knowledge of the Red Angus sire summary, Red Angus breed history and the Red Angus Association of America staff, board of directors and departments. General beef industry, beef breeds, nutrition, management, anatomy and reproduction are included in the Stockman’s Quiz.
The Equipment Identification portion of the Stockman’s Quiz will consist of actual equipment/items used throughout the beef industry to be identified in writing on answer blanks provided. Items can range in size and will encompass many areas of the beef industry including veterinary supplies and various items used in feedlot cattle processing, calving time, fencing, hay baling…
- One hour will be allowed for contestants to complete the entire quiz: 30 minutes for the Stockman’s Quiz and 30 minutes for Equipment Identification.
- Contestants may not bring notes, books or reference materials to the testing area. All materials needed (testing sheet, sire summary pages, number two pencil and tie-breaking questions) will be provided.
- Conferring with other contestants constitutes disqualification.
- Ties will be broken by tie-breaker questions which will be graded only in the event of a tie. If a tie still remains, five pre-selected, unmarked questions from the test will be used to decide the final placing.
BEEF QUIZ BOWL
Conducted annually at Round-Up
The beef quiz bowl will test team members’ knowledge and quick recall of cattle and, specifically Red Angus, facts.
- Teams will compete in a series of head-to-head competitions in which points are earned by
- Each team will consist of members that are randomly drawn and assigned by the Round-Up planning committee. Teams will most likely be 5 members each.correctly answering questions related to the beef industry and Red Angus.
- Team placings are determined by single elimination.
- Each competition between teams in the first elimination round will consist of one round.
Round one: questions are answered in a head-to-head competition by individual team members – no conferring - . For example, questions would be directed to the first member of each team, then the second, then the third and fourth. The first of the designated team members to signal is given five seconds in which to answer. If correct, the team earns 1 point.
If the first person to ring in answers incorrectly, the member on the opposing team has 5 seconds to provide the correct answer.
Round one is a single elimination competition.
Round two: consists of ten questions – the first five are head-tohead as in round one. The second five questions are open – first person to ring in attempts to answer correctly within 5 seconds.
PRINT ADVERTISING CONTEST
Conducted annually at Round-Up
This competition requires the participant to create an advertisement relating to the beef industry and utilizing Red Angus.
- The created ad can promote any item related to the Red Angus and/or beef industry
- Each ad must include Red Angus.
- All supplies needed to complete the ads will be provided by the Round-Up planning committee.
- Judges will score the ads in each of the two divisions (junior and senior) as follows:
- 35% Clarity of what is being promoted
- 30% Neatness and organization
- 35% Originality of design
Print Advertising entries are started and finished at Round-Up. All materials are provided to every entrant in a designated area during the check-in period.
RED ANGUS POSTER CONTEST

Posters displayed at the National Convention
The Poster Contest offers JRA members an opportunity to display their creative and artistic abilities. Completed posters will be entered upon check-in at Round-Up each year.
Poster Contest Guidelines:
- Contestants must be members of the JRA
- All work must be that of the entrant. Contestants should include the following information in the upper left-hand corner on the back of the poster: name, complete mailing address, member code, age (as of January l of the calendar year), subject category in which the poster is entered.
- There are 2 age divisions:
- Junior – 15 years and younger
- Senior – 16 years through 21 years
- There are three subject categories:
- Breed/Association Promotion – highlights the value of Red Angus in a successful cattle operation or the benefits of active membership in a Red Angus Association.
- Membership Recruitment – develop and illustrate ideas and themes to recruit new members into the JRA or a state junior association and/or recruitment of JRA members to Round-Up.
- Herd Advertisement – create print advertisement suitable for promotion of your own herd or a fictitious (but realistic) situation.
- Poster dimensions must be either 14” x 22” or 22” x 28”.
- There is no limit to the use or style of drawings or lettering, provided they are the design and handiwork of the entrant. Posters should not be made using computer-generated graphics or designs. Photographs, magazine clippings, stencils and adhesive letters may be used.
- To insure the safety of the entrants handiwork, it is suggested that posters be laminated or covered with clear, contact paper.
JRA SCRAPBOOK COMPETITION
Conducted annually at Round-Up
The Scrapbook Competition offers a chance for JRA members to showcase their handiwork in preserving their memories of Red Angus involvement.
Scrapbook Guidelines:
- Scrapbooks must be created by members of the JRA and the member exhibiting the book.
- Scrapbook cover should incorporate the year and include a consistent theme carried throughout the book.
- Each event should be arranged in calendar sequence.
- Include photographs, news clippings, press releases, or anything else that might be found interesting and exciting.
- Books should be neat and organized with no loose pieces and everything should be captioned.
- Scrapbooks will be judged on contest, originality, neatness and general effect.
- There are 2 divisions:
- Junior – 15 years and younger
- Senior – 16 years through 21 years
- Ages are as of January 1 of the calendar year
- Scrapbooks will be judged by a committee at Round-Up each year.
- Scrapbooks can be entered only once in the JRA Scrapbook Competition.
INFORMED SPEECH
Conducted annually at Round-Up
The Informed Speech Contest is modeled after extemporaneous speaking and will provide Round-Up participants an opportunity to showcase their speaking talents and ability to “think on their feet”. Topics for the speeches will be written on slips of paper and placed in a hat. Each speaker may draw three topics and will then select the topic on which they want to speak. Once a topic is selected, an information packet will be provided the speaker for a set time period.
All speeches will be given to the entire Round-Up attendance but will be evaluated by a panel of judges. Two divisions will be used: juniors (15 and under) and seniors (16 and older).
CATTLE EVALUATION
Conducted annually at Round-Up
The Cattle Evaluation Contest will consist of a number of Red Angus cattle classes which may include: heifers, bulls, steers, cow/calf pairs and keep/cull. Some classes will be designated as “Questions Classes” – after judging the class, 10 questions will be asked on the class and answers provided by each judge on their placement cards.
BARNYARD OLYMPICS/RANCH RODEO
Conducted annually at Round-Up
Barnyard Olympics/Ranch Rodeo is a team competition for skill and fun. Each team will have to complete a variety of tasks/skills that may be performed in an every day working situation on a cattle operation or may be designed to test speed and accuracy.
- Each team will consist of members randomly drawn by the Round-Up planning committee that will represent, at a minimum, one junior member 15 years of age or younger and one senior member 16 years or older. Teams will most likely consist of four members but will vary due to numbers in attendance.
- Teams will compete in a variety of events scored by time to completion.
- In some events, every team member must compete; in some events, only selected or volunteer members will compete as not all team members will be needed to complete the task.
- Team results will be calculated to determine the winning Barnyard Olympics/Ranch Rodeo competitors.
JRA POWERPOINT PRESENTATION CONTEST
CONTEST RULES
The JRA Powerpoint Presentation Contest provides members an opportunity to showcase their creative and technical talents in creating, designing and producing a powerpoint presentation promoting Red Angus or things associated with Red Angus or the JRA. For example, a presentation on Round-Up or the Junior Stockgrower Contest could be submitted. Though not required, the presentation may include music, video clips, and/or slide transitions.
The computer program used to create the presentation is not limited as there are a number of programs available that will create a slide presentation.
- Each presentation must have a minimum:
- junior division (15 years of age and younger) – 6 slides
- senior division (16 through 21 years of age) – 12 slides
- Presentations must have at least 2 pictures or clip art that support the idea of the presentation.
- Presentations may include but do not require music, video clips, or slide transitions.
- Presentations must relate to the Junior Red Angus Association or the Red Angus breed in general.
- Presentations will be judged on:
- 40% Slide content
- 35% Originality
- 15% Technical merit
- 10% Overall affect of the presentation

JRA GRAPHIC DESIGN / WEB SITE DESIGN CONTESTCONTEST RULES
The JRA Graphic Design Contest was established to provide another opportunity for members to showcase their creative and technical skills in developing Red Angus promotion materials. Entries in the Graphic Design Contest must be created by the JRA member submitting the design and must be created using computer technology.
- Your website or graphic design must be created using computer technology.
- Promote the Red Angus breed, organization, industry or individual herd.
Examples are flyers, advertisements, newsletters, brochures, etc.
- If you enter a web site design, there must be at least one link to another page included with your entry.
- Designs will be judged on:
- 35% Clarity of what is being promoted
- 30% Neatness and organization
- 35% Originality of design
There are two divisions in the Graphic Design Contest:
- Division 1 – business card
- Division 2 –Red Angus promotion (includes flyers, brochures, breed promotion material, newsletters, personal herd promotion, individual animal promotion…)
Website designs are wide open for entry but entries must relate to Red Angus promotion – an event, ranch, field day, JRA, commercial marketing, individual cattle…
Entries must be completed and received by May 1. You can e-mail your graphic design, but a hard copy is preferred, and must e-mail your website design. However, you may also send your graphic design via regular, United States Postal Service mail.
