The JRA/Sal Forbes Traveling Female program was initiated through efforts of Sal Forbes and Harold Hughes. The traveling female program provides practical experience in the care and rearing of a Red Angus calf and the care and rebreeding of a Red Angus female and rewards the junior's hard work with ownership of the calf.

Through the Traveling Female program, a bred Red Angus female is awarded to one junior in the region (through the below described process) for one year, during which time the JRA member cares for, calves out and rebreeds the female. The junior member takes ownership of the resulting calf at weaning in the fall while the bred, traveling female goes on to the next recipient.

During the 1998 Junior Stockgrower's Contest, a Red Angus heifer was donated to the contest and raffled to raise funding for the competition. Harold Hughes, Glacier Red Angus, Polson, Montana, won the heifer raffle. He then donated the heifer to the juniors in the Rocky Mountain region of the JRA and began a competition for them. Juniors, less than 20 years of age, were invited to submit an essay on why they wanted to "win" the traveling heifer. A committee reviewed the applications and selected the first winner in the Rocky Mountain region. This individual was awarded the heifer for one year, until her first calf was weaned. At weaning, the female was then to "travel" to another junior in that region, until that calf was weaned. The program is designed for the original female to "travel" each year while the junior keeps the resulting calf. This calf is registered to that junior and the traveling female is transferred to the new recipient with breeding information.

During the 1999 Junior Stockgrower's Contest, another heifer was raffled and Harold Hughes won again. This time, he donated the heifer to juniors in the Great Plains region, which was hosting the National Convention that year. The Great Plains region contact person is Linda Andersen, Panhandle Cattle Company, Lakeside, Nebraska. A committee was formed and applications were received from juniors interested in being awarded the female.

In 2000, a heifer was donated to the program by Don and Marilyn Wagner, Wellington, Colorado, for juniors in the West region. Larry Lorenzen, Pendleton, Oregon, heads that selection committee.

In 2002, Joyce and George Tice, Deerwoode Farm, Boones Mill, Virginia, donated a heifer for the Traveling Female program in the Northeast/Mason-Dixon Red Angus Association region/area.

In 2002, The Southeast Red Angus Association, contact Miriam Foschee, agreed to donate a heifer to the program for the South region. Jim McClean, McClean Red Angus, Stone Mountain, Georgia, graciously donated a bred heifer for the Southeast.

In 2002, Ron and Lois and Craig and Peggy Beiber, Beiber Red Angus, Leola, South Dakota, donated a heifer for the Traveling Female program in the North Plains region.

The ultimate goal of program founder, Harold Hughes, was to have one heifer in each of the six regions of the JRA. With interest and generous breeder support, we have achieved that goal!

Due to the variance in environment and management practices within each region, each individual regional committee has established its own calendar for selection and movement of the Traveling Female within that region see below.

JRA members may receive a Traveling Female application by downloading directly from the JRA website or by direct request from the Junior Programs Coordinator or the regional contact person.

JRA members wishing to apply for a Traveling Female MUST send their completed applications to the appropriate contact person in their region by the listed application deadline.
