The national average for feeder steers ended the week at $254.41 — $3.51 higher. Compared to last year, feeder steers were averaging $180.71, so it's good to see prices stay up.

Fed cattle trade in the South was $3 higher at $183, with northern trade $3 lower at $185. Live cattle prices closed the week from $3.70 to $4.62 higher.

Stocker calves traded at $285.17, which was $1 to $6 higher than the previous week.

Total red meat production under federal inspection for the week ending Sept. 16 was around 1,043.9 million pounds according to USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service. This was 13.2% higher than last week, but is still down 4.2% from a year ago.
