DNA collection and submission reminders

Posted August 27, 2024

When collecting and sending in your DNA samples, please remember the following.

Please send samples early. Since rush service is not offered for processing samples, they must be submitted early to ensure timely results. Processing times are expected to increase to five to seven weeks in the coming months.

A high-quality sample is the most crucial part of your DNA process. Please inspect your samples and perform a quality check before sending them to the RAAA office for processing. Samples that do not meet quality standards will be rejected and will not be sent to the lab for processing. For more sample collection basics, refer to the first page of the DNA order form.

  1. Hair samples
    • Do not cut the hair, as DNA is located in the follicles at the root. No follicles means nothing for the lab to test.
    • Ensure all hair samples are placed on a hair card, with follicles placed under the sticky film and at least 30 follicles are present.
  2. Blood samples
    • Fill the circle on the card completely and let the blood dry completely before closing.
    • DO NOT send blood samples from twin animals due to potential in-utero cross contamination. For accurate results, use hair samples and TSU samples instead.
  3. TSUs
    • Ensure the tube contains tissue, liquid the green ball and that the red stopper is visible.
    • Avoid collecting TSU samples from dirty or tattooed areas on the ear. Non-clean surfaces can contaminate the sample.

Include a completed and signed order form with all samples sent to RAAA, along with payment. Processing will be delayed without these. Download forms at https://redangus.org/genetics/dna-forms/
