The evaluation of cattle involved in imports/exports from one association or country to another presents unique challenges that significantly increase the complexity of the genetic evaluation process. Such cattle are registered in two separate breed associations for example, the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) and the Canadian Angus Association (CAA) with both organizations independently submitting data to International Genetic Solutions (IGS), the third-party provider responsible for conducting the genetic evaluation. Managing data from multiple registries and submission pathways creates numerous opportunities for duplication of records and deletions due to conflicting identifiers.

Numerous concerns have been raised by breeders utilizing imported Angus cattle regarding the reliability of their EPDs. Our message to those breeders is simple: We hear you, and we are committed to investing the time and resources necessary to thoroughly evaluate these cattle and ensure the accuracy of their genetic predictions.

The first phase of this effort will focus on foundational data integrity. Specifically, we will work to ensure that each animal is represented by a single, unique identifier within the evaluation despite having multiple registration numbers (one from each association), and that every animal is properly connected to its complete contemporary group. This reduces confusion that results from competing animal records in the IGS evaluation. Given the complexity of the data flow, we anticipate identifying isolated areas where further improvements can be made.

During the first phase of this work, RAAA will work collaboratively with colleagues at CAA and IGS with the shared goal of accurately evaluating and describing Canadian- origin Angus cattle. As this work progresses, we welcome breeder participation and encourage the submission of detailed examples of animals with EPDs that appear inconsistent or concerning directly to our Director of Breed Improvement, Larry Keenan. Such examples can be valuable in helping identify opportunities for improvement.
