Indian Canyon Ranch honored as Commercial Producer of the Year

Posted September 23, 2015

Grapevine, Texas - Recognizing a long history of tradition and excellence, the Indian Canyon Ranch, Lamesa, Texas, was presented with the Commercial Producer of the Year award at the 2015 Red Angus Association of America National Convention on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Donnell Brown, Throckmorton, Texas, made the presentation. Ranch owners John and Elizabeth Boswell and Patricia and Clyde McCall were on hand to accept the award.

Indian Canyon Ranch, which was established in 1882 by Col. C.C. Slaughter, has a long-storied history, including bringing one of the first English bulls to breed to Longhorn cows in the early 1900s.

In making the award presentation, Brown noted that for the past 16 years, the ranch has only been using registered Red Angus bulls on their Braford F1-cross cows, many which return to the original Slaughter ranch cows. “The family continues the tradition of raising the best cattle that they can, and that includes the use of Red Angus,” said Brown.

Indian Canyon Ranch enrolls their calves in the Red Angus Feeder Calf Certification Program annually, as well as markets through the Superior Livestock Auction channels, highlighting their Red Angus genetics.

The Red Angus Association of America serves the beef industry by enhancing and promoting the competitive advantages of Red Angus and Red Angus-influenced cattle. RAAA provides commercial producers with the most objectively described cattle in the industry by seeking and implementing new technologies based on sound scientific principles that measure traits of economic importance.
