Red Angus Sponsors Superior Livestock Auction’s Summer Sales

Posted June 27, 2011

The Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) is once again excited to sponsor Superior Livestock Auction’s summer sale line up. The sales kick off at the Week in the Rockies in beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colo., June 27 – July 1.

Then July 25 – July 29, the sales head to the jewel of the high desert, the Video Royale in Winnemucca, Nev., and wrap up at the Big Horn Classic from historic Sheridan, Wyo, August 15 - 19. These sponsorships are just another example of RAAA’s commitment to Red Angus bull customers in delivering added-value options and increased market access.

Superior Livestock anticipates more than 650,000 head of quality feeder calves, yearlings and replacement females will be marketed at these sales. The Week in the Rockies, the Video Royale and the Big Horn Classic each have a strong tradition of attracting some of the nation’s best cattle, including tens of thousands of Red Angus-sired calves.

Red Angus come with bred-in traits that feeders across the country are aggressively seeking, including quiet dispositions and improved heat tolerance, which help to lower feeder calves’ stress levels so they spend more time cleaning the feed bunk.

Improved carcass consistency, higher marbling and fewer days on feed describe the traits Red Angus calves bring to the pen. These traits continue to deliver profits to the feed yard and have feeders competing to purchase Red Angus calves.

The most profitable qualities of Red Angus cattle, however, lie on the maternal side of the equation. Ranchers have long relied upon the benefits of calving ease, higher pregnancy rates, lower maintenance requirements and greater longevity. Because of these cowherd-building traits, Red Angus heifers often sell equal to – or even higher than – their steer counterparts due to their demand as replacement females.

Watch for Red Angus calves selling throughout the summer sales. They’re identified in the catalog with the words “Red Angus.” Producers capture additional value if their Red Angus lots are enrolled in the “Yellow Tag” Feeder Calf Certification Program (FCCP). The FCCP is the beef industry’s most experienced and best-valued USDA Verified Genetic, Source and Age Program.

For more than 17 years, the FCCP “Yellow Tag” has been adding value to Red Angus-sired calves. The program continues to break enrollment records with over 125,000 head wearing the Red Angus FCCP “Yellow Tag” this year. It comes with the USDA-verified claims of group age, source to ranch of origin and 50 percent Red Angus bloodlines.

These calves are from some of the most progressive ranches in the nation and are redefining what reputation cattle mean to a producer’s bottom line. Simply look for the Red Angus FCCP “Yellow Tag” in the catalog and/or on the video screen. A full list of  FCCP-enrolled calves is available in the front of each sale’s catalog or they can be found by selecting the sort option from the online catalog.
